Here’s The Birthday Puppy

Posted July 24th @ 1:50 pm by Mike

This past weekend was jam packed with fun and excitement.  I don’t have a lot of time today so I will talk about later during the week (but lets just say you may be reading the Blog of the worlds greatest Bocce Baller).

Weekend festivities included a birthday party and a surprise party.  Both may of effected this weeks weigh in.  I was really good before that so we are down 1.2 lbs at 255.4.  I feel I am eating a lot better now but I need to put some effort into actually doing something physical.

Today (July 24th) is my dogs third birthday.  We got him from a breeder and I beleive we had 3rd pick.  There were 11 males and 2 females (with one of each already spoken for).  One of the puppies (only several weeks old at this point) was bigger then the rest but seemed to use his extra size to maul the others in what seemed like playful wrestling.  We were told that the breeders had found him in their bag of food (he managed to break into a shed to get at it).  This may of been some foreshadowing but ‘The Wife’ and I pretty much knew we found our dog.

Guinness is a chocolate Labrador Retriever.  We picked the breed because we knew that there would be kids around in the near future.  Male Labs are supposed to be 55-75lbs so we figured if he averaged around 65lbs that seemed about right for us.  But for some reason every pet that ‘The Wife’ has grows huge.  Guinness weighs in right around 95lbs and has been as heavy as 110.  He is not overweight though.  You see a lot of 100lb Labs that look like sausages because Labs have not control over their eating (they will eat everything they have access too, there is no such thing as ‘full’).  Guinness is just huge.

There really is something special about having a dog who is always happy to see you no matter the circumstances.  I feel bad that he doesn’t get the attention he used to (or deserves) since Travis came around.  Soon it will return as our lives continue to stabilize.  He really is a great dog.  I didn’t think I was going to make it through the first year and a half (our vet actually told us ‘You know the brown ones are crazy!’) but it was all worth it (plus good baby training).  Food still makes him crazy but you can use it to control him and he gets really excited when people come by (since he is not the center of attention these days) and takes a while to cool down.  But once he does he is happy as long as he is with all the other people … just like him.

Happy Birthday Buddy!

(This picture is actually from his first birthday.  He doesn’t look much different now).
